It seems that every day there’s a new superfood being lauded for its health benefits. It’s hard to keep track of them all. Here at Fitspot, we want to make health simple, so read on for the run-down on this week’s feature: Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV).
While many of the effects of ACV are not backed by scientific research, proponents of this household staple argue that it can be used as a natural remedy for just about anything, from curing the hiccups to helping you drop a few pounds.
What exactly is Apple Cider Vinegar?
ACV is highly acidic, which is part of its magic! The acid is said to kill the bacteria that causes colds, digestive problems, sore throats, and even bad breath. Gargling some apple cider vinegar might even whiten your teeth. And people some claim that applying ACV directly to bruises and acne can reduce swelling and inflammation.
ACV contains potassium and enzymes that may combat fatigue, and some studies show that it has an antiglycemic effect. Two tablespoons before bed may help lower blood sugar levels, suppress your appetite, increase your metabolism, and reduce water retention. The result? Less bloating and even some reported weight-loss.
Ready to give it a try?
If you want to give it a try, we recommend an organic brand, like Bragg Organic Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with the ‘Mother’. Drinking it undiluted can wear down the enamel on your teeth or burn your throat and your stomach, so mix your ACV in water or tea. You can even incorporate it into your meals, Try adding it to your condiments, like salad dressing and mayo. Avoid consuming it on an empty stomach, and beware that for some, ACV may act as a natural laxative. In other words, you may have to experiment with how much works for you, but we recommend 2-3 tablespoons per day.
Ask your Fitspot trainers if they incorporate Apple Cider Vinegar into their routine!
