Finding a spare moment in the workday to focus on yourself can be a challenge. Projects pile up, deadlines approach, meetings need scheduling—and balancing it all becomes just another item on that to-do list! It’s no wonder why the average employee reports being stressed at the office. According the American Psychological Association, two-thirds of men and women said that they experience significant stress while at work, and one in four has missed work because of stress. So what can we do?

Adding a little self-care into your workday routine can help reduce stress while allowing you to relax and refocus on the tasks at hand. Self-care is defined as the care provided to you, by you. It’s the actions and attention we give ourselves in order to maintain both our physical and mental health. If you’re thinking that incorporating self care into your day is yet another item on that to-do list, think again! The great thing about self care is it doesn’t have to be complicated. There are many small things you can do throughout the day that will have a huge impact, and will help you achieve a calmer, happier state of mind. Read on to discover our seven simple strategies for practicing self care in the workplace.

1. Stock up on healthy snacks.

Wholesome, nutritious foods nourish both mind and body. Keep a few options like trail mix or fresh fruit on your desk to keep you full and focused.

2. Take frequent breaks to move or stretch.

If your job involves sitting at a desk all day, take a few minutes every hour or two to get up and stretch. If your office has stairs, walk them! Getting your heartrate up can help you feel energized and more awake.

3. Have lunch away from your desk.

Many workers feel they can be more productive if they work through lunch and just eat at their desk. Wrong! Step out for your lunch hour to recharge and refocus. It doesn’t mean you have to go out to eat, either. Dine in the company courtyard or break room, or head outside to a local park if possible.

4. Leave work at work.

Let’s face it—this one is hard! Technology keeps us connected constantly, so checking in with work when you’re on-the-go is all to easy. If you’re feeling the stress, try unplugging. Leave your work devices at the office, or pick a time and promise yourself you won’t work after those hours.

5. Get some fresh air.

Ahh, there’s nothing like nature to nourish the soul! Computers, cubicles, and conference rooms can make you feel boxed in. Take a break by heading outdoors, where you can enjoy the benefits of fresh air and sunshine.

6. Take advantage of corporate wellness programs.

Many companies offer wellness programs through Fitspot that focus on everything from physical fitness to mindful meditation. Check with your HR representative to see if you can join any on-site workout classes, seminars and more!

7. Make your workspace your own.

If you can, bring a touch of home to your desk or workspace to make it more comfortable and inviting. After all, you spend a majority of your day here! Whether it’s adding a live plant, family photos, or personal office accessories, adding a homey touch can boost your mood and attitude.
